CRI Signs Strategic Agreement for Yushu Green Methanol

Beijing, China

12 August 2025

Carbon Recycling International (CRI) has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Jilin Huajin Energy Co., Ltd. for the Yushu Green Methanol Project, a landmark initiative in China’s low-carbon transition.

Located near Changchun City in Jilin Province, Northeast China, the Changchun Yushu Green Methanol Project will use two complementary production routes to produce renewable methanol:

·         E-methanol – produced by combining hydrogen from renewable-powered electrolysis with captured CO₂

·         Bio-methanol – produced from biomass waste via gasification

With a planned annual capacity of 120,000 tonnes of e-methanol and 150,000 tonnes of bio-methanol, the facility is designed to reduce CO₂ emissions by about 410,000 tonnes each year.

Backed by an investment of RMB 21.4 billion (approximately USD 3 billion / EUR 2.75 billion), the plant is scheduled to begin production in mid-2027. CRI will supply its patented Emissions-to-Liquids (ETL) technology, central to the production process, and provide ISCC certification support. The green methanol will be supplied primarily to the maritime industry in the EU and Asia as a low-carbon alternative to traditional bunker fuel.

Planned as one of the world’s largest, and China’s first combined bio- and e-methanol production facilities based on biomass waste gasification, the project demonstrates China’s commitment to scaling renewable fuel production and advancing the energy transition. The agreement was signed during a high-level ceremony in Beijing attended by senior government, industry, and international representatives.

“This project builds on CRI’s long-standing role in advancing renewable methanol at commercial scale. Our experience and technology are helping to shape some of the most ambitious low-carbon fuel projects in the world, and Yushu is the next step in that journey.”
